Thirteen Companies Recall Allegedly Defective Bicycles with Front Disc Brakes Over Crash Hazard

WASHINGTON — Thirteen manufacturers and distributors have announced a recall of certain bicycles equipped with front disc brakes due to a defect involving the quick-release lever on the front wheel hub.

According to the recall notice, an open quick-release lever can come into contact with the front disc brake rotor, potentially causing the front wheel to stop abruptly or detach from the bicycle. This poses a significant risk of injury to riders.

The recall applies to bicycles that have front disc brakes and a black or silver quick-release lever on the front hub. Affected bicycles can be identified by measuring the distance between the fully opened quick-release lever and the disc brake rotor. If the gap is less than 6 millimeters, the bicycle is subject to the recall.

Officials report three incidents in which an open quick-release lever contacted the front disc brake assembly, leading to sudden wheel stoppage or wheel separation. One rider suffered injuries in one of the reported cases.
