Baltazar Olvera Killed in Work Accident at Judson Independent School District Elementary Construction Site in Converse, Texas

CONVERSE, Texas — A construction worker died Wednesday at a work site at Converse Elementary School.

District officials said a third-party construction company employed the man contracted for a project at the school and was not a Judson ISD employee.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the worker as 63-year-old Baltazar Rubio Olvera. The cause of death was a blunt force injury to the head.

No additional details will be released at this time.

Fatal Construction Accident Raises Concerns About Worker Safety Protections

It is not enough for a company to offer condolences to a family after a fatal workplace incident. A life has been lost, and the family deserves more than sympathy — they deserve answers. Fatal worksite accidents remain a serious safety concern in the construction industry, and many involve blunt force injuries that occur when safety measures fail.

Companies are responsible for maintaining safe job sites, ensuring hazards are properly controlled, and providing workers with the training and protections needed to prevent serious injury. Were safety protocols followed at this site? Were hazards properly identified and addressed? Was the work area organized and secured to reduce the risk of blunt force injuries from equipment, materials, or falling objects? These precautions are essential to protecting workers and preventing tragedies like this one.

We have handled many cases involving construction workers who lose their lives simply trying to earn a living, often because safety was not treated as a priority on the job. When corners are cut to save time or money, workers are exposed to dangers that could have been prevented.

Only a careful investigation can show whether negligence or safety failures played a role in Mr. Olvera’s death. Families shouldn’t have to search for answers on their own, especially while they are grieving. If mistakes or failures are found, those responsible should be held accountable.

Our thoughts are with the Olvera family during this difficult time.
