Bicyclist Killed in Accident with Semi-Truck on the 44000 block of Osgood Road in Fremont, California

FREMONT, Calif. — A bicyclist was killed Friday afternoon following a collision with a semi-truck on a busy Fremont roadway, according to local authorities.

Police say officers were called to the scene in the 44000 block of Osgood Road after reports of a crash involving a commercial truck and a cyclist.

Authorities reported that the semi-truck had been traveling northbound on Osgood Road and stopped in the center turn lane in preparation for a left turn into a business parking area. At the same time, the bicyclist was traveling southbound along the west side of the roadway.

As the truck began turning into the driveway, the cyclist approached, and the two collided. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further information has been released.

Fatal Bicycle Crash Involving Semi-Truck Raises Serious Safety Questions

Even when bicyclists follow the rules of the road, they are at extreme risk when a commercial truck is involved. A wide left turn can sweep across lanes, leaving the person beside the truck with no chance to react.

Left turns are one of the most dangerous maneuvers for large commercial trucks. Did the truck driver account for blind spots? Oncoming traffic?  Vulnerable road users like cyclists? A cyclist approaching has little ability to avoid a turning semi-truck, especially when the truck’s size blocks sightlines or occupies multiple lanes.

These cases are often described as tragic accidents. But when a commercial vehicle is involved, it is not enough to stop there. It is necessary to ask whether the turn was made safely, whether proper caution was used, and whether this collision could have been avoided.

Someone— a person— an individual with a family— lost their life while going on an afternoon bike ride. Their family is now left grieving and wondering what could have possibly gone wrong.

This is not something grieving families should be left to sort out on their own. Understanding what happened often requires looking beyond initial reports and asking questions that are not answered early on.

They deserve to know what happened, how it happened, and whether responsibility lies with the truck driver or the company that put the truck on the road.

May all the facts surrounding this collision come to light.
