Ford Recalls More Than 116,000 Vehicles Over Engine Block Heater Fire and Injury Risk

WASHINGTON — Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 116,000 vehicles following concerns that a component designed to warm the engine in cold weather may pose a fire hazard, federal regulators announced Tuesday.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves the engine block heater, a device intended to heat the engine prior to startup in freezing temperatures. Regulators say the heater can crack and leak coolant when plugged into an external power source. If this occurs, it may lead to an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire under the hood.

The recall affects certain 2013–2018 Ford Focus, 2013–2019 Ford Escape, and 2015–2016 Lincoln MKC vehicles equipped with a two-liter engine.

Officials reported 12 fire-related incidents connected to the defect, with several involving the Escape model.
