Jorge Zapata Killed, Mayrani Martinez Morales Seriously Injured in an Accident with a Semi-truck on FM 866 in Ector County, Texas

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — One man was killed, and another person was seriously injured, on Monday morning following a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of FM 866 and West University.

Authorities reported that a 2015 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on FM 866 and began turning east onto West University when it collided with 27-year-old Jorge Zapata’s 2025 GMC Sierra. Zapata was traveling northbound on FM 866 at the time of the crash.

The GMC Sierra then struck a 2003 Ford F-150.

Jorge Zapata of Odessa was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in Zapata’s vehicle, identified as Mayrani Martinez Morales, was transported to Medical Center Health System with serious injuries.

Fatal Intersection Crash Involving Commercial Truck Raises Safety Questions

Collisions like this should not happen. A routine drive should never end in a loss of life or serious injury. Yet incidents like this remain far too familiar.

We have seen this before. In a similar wrongful death case we handled, a family came to us after losing their loved one in a fatal intersection crash in Brazoria County, Texas. In that case, a large truck failed to yield at a stop sign and drove directly into the path of a passenger vehicle, leaving the driver no time to react. The collision was violent and life-ending.

When we looked beyond the initial police report, deeper safety failures came to light. Our investigation uncovered problems related to the trucking company’s hiring, training, and supervision practices that allowed an unqualified driver to operate a commercial vehicle. While the company initially tried to avoid responsibility, the family ultimately received what they deserved: clear answers and accountability for what happened to their loved one.

In our experience, intersection crashes involving commercial trucks often reveal deeper problems once the surface facts are examined. Records matter. Driver history matters. Company policies matter. What a trucking company knew — and what it failed to correct — can be just as important as what happened in the seconds before impact.

Investigations like this take time, access to information, and experience. Families facing sudden loss or serious injury should not have to search for answers on their own, especially while trying to grieve or recover.

Jorge Zapata’s family, along with Mayrani Martínez Morales and her family, deserve clear answers. They deserve to understand how this crash happened, whether it could have been prevented, and whether the truck driver met the basic safety duties required of every commercial operator on the road.

We hope Ms. Morales continues to recover, and that her family — along with Mr. Zapata’s — can find the answers they deserve.
