Derek Pearson Killed in Accident with a Trailer Truck at the Intersection of State Highway 302 and Farm-to-Market Road 866 in Ector County, Texas

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — A man was killed Wednesday night following a two-vehicle crash at an intersection in Ector County, according to authorities. The collision occurred at the intersection of State Highway 302 and Farm-to-Market Road 866.

Official reports indicate that a 2024 Peterbilt 567 was traveling southbound on FM 866 and entered the intersection without yielding at a stop sign, with its attached trailer extending into the westbound lanes of SH 30.

A 2022 Ford F-250 was traveling westbound on SH 302 when it struck the trailer.

The driver of the Ford, identified as 49-year-old Derek Pearson of Bellville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

When a Truck Fails to Yield: Seeking Answers After a Fatal Intersection Crash

This is tragic. Someone can do everything right on the road—follow the rules, drive carefully, wear their seatbelt—and still lose their life because of another person’s mistake. When a loss like this comes without warning, it leaves a family trying to understand what went wrong.

Many serious and fatal truck crashes occur when a truck fails to stop or yield when it should. Unfortunately, this is something we see again and again in commercial vehicle crashes.

In one wrongful death case we handled involving a fatal intersection crash, a large truck failed to yield at a stop sign in Brazoria County, Texas, and drove directly into the path of a passenger vehicle, causing a violent crash that led to the driver’s death.

When we looked beyond the initial crash report, we saw deeper safety failures, including poor hiring, training, and supervision practices that allowed an unqualified driver to operate a commercial vehicle. Only by pushing past surface-level explanations did the family learn what truly happened.

The trucking company tried to avoid responsibility, but the family ultimately received what they deserved: answers and accountability regarding their loved one.

Mr. Pearson’s family deserves the same attention. They deserve answers, and they deserve to know whether this crash could have been prevented and whether the truck driver met the basic safety duties required of every commercial operator on the road.

We hope that the Pearson family finds the answers they need.
