Milbank Man Seriously Injured in Rollover Accident on Interstate 29 in Brookings County, South Dakota

WHITE, S.D.A – A Milbank man was seriously injured Thursday evening following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 29 in Brookings County, authorities said.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office reported the truck was traveling southbound when it crossed into the median and overturned, coming to rest on its passenger side.

Deputies located an adult male occupant who was conscious but trapped inside the vehicle. He was extricated from the wreckage and initially transported to Brookings Hospital before being transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

The injured driver, identified as a 28-year-old man from Milbank, remains hospitalized.

Vehicles need to be checked for defects in rollover crashes

A serious rollover can happen in an instant. When a driver is badly hurt and trapped inside a vehicle, it forces a closer look at not just how the crash happened, but how the vehicle itself performed when it mattered most.

In situations like this, police reports often focus on driver actions or road conditions, especially during the colder months. But those are not the only factors that deserve attention. How a vehicle responds during a rollover — its stability, structure, and ability to protect the person inside — can make a critical difference in the extent of the injuries.

Being trapped inside a vehicle after a rollover is a terrifying experience, and it raises serious questions about whether the vehicle provided the protection a driver should be able to rely on. Roof strength, restraint systems, and overall design all come into play during these moments. These are details that are rarely examined unless trained professionals take the time to look beyond the surface facts.

Even in a single-vehicle crash, injured drivers and their families deserve clear answers. Small design or performance failures can greatly affect the outcome of a rollover, yet they often go unnoticed in early reporting. A closer examination of the vehicle itself may help explain why injuries were so severe and whether better protection should have been expected.

Too often, crashes like this are dismissed as unavoidable or resolved quickly, leaving injured people without full justice for the failures that caused their harm. Looking deeper can change that.

But no one should have to do this alone. Asking the right questions and pushing past surface-level explanations takes experience and resources that injured drivers should not be expected to shoulder while they are trying to recover.

May this injured individual and his family find the answers they need.
