Dontavis Hood Killed in Chain-Reaction Accident Involving a Semi-truck on Interstate 45 in Leon County, Buffalo, Texas

BUFFALO, Texas — One person was killed and others possibly injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 45 near Buffalo on Wednesday night.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a southbound passenger vehicle became disabled in an inside travel lane of I-45.

A southbound tractor-trailer later struck the disabled vehicle from behind. The driver of the passenger car, identified as 33-year-old Dontavis Hood of Missouri City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the initial impact led to a secondary collision when the tractor-trailer struck an SUV traveling in the same lane, forcing it through a cable barrier and into the northbound lanes of the interstate.

Three people were inside the SUV at the time of the crash. Authorities reported possible injuries but did not release further details.

Seeking Answers After a Semi-Truck Rear-Ends a Disabled Vehicle

What happened here is devastating. A driver experienced an emergency when his vehicle became disabled in an active travel lane, a situation that can unfold quickly, leaving little room for safe options. Mechanical failures and sudden breakdowns happen, often without warning.

When a vehicle stalls on a highway, drivers are placed in a highly vulnerable position. They must try to protect themselves while navigating traffic moving at highway speeds. What happened after that moment is what matters most now.

Commercial truck drivers have a duty to maintain control of their vehicles, keep a proper lookout, and adjust their speed to nighttime and roadway conditions. That responsibility includes anticipating hazards ahead and being prepared to slow or stop for disabled vehicles in the roadway. Those duties do not disappear after dark; they become even more necessary.

The key question now is simple: Was the truck driver keeping the lookout required to maintain an assured clear distance ahead?

A full investigation can help answer those questions. Skid marks, lighting conditions, visibility, dash-camera footage, and data from the truck’s electronic systems may show what the driver saw, when they saw it, and whether there was enough time to react and avoid the collision.

A person was killed, and others were possibly injured. The family left behind and those impacted deserve clear answers. They deserve to know whether this crash could have been prevented and whether all safety duties were met.

We hope Dontavis Hood’s family receives the answers they are seeking.
