One Killed in Rollover Accident Near Highway 317 and Airport Road in Temple, Texas

Temple, Texas — One person died Monday afternoon following a rollover crash near the intersection of Highway 317 and Airport Road.

Officers responded to reports of a collision and, upon arrival, located a white SUV that had overturned after leaving the roadway.

Authorities said the SUV was traveling northbound on Highway 317 when it veered off the road near Airport Road, entered a ditch, and rolled over.

One individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vehicles need to be checked for defects in rollover crashes

When a family loses someone in a rollover crash, the grief is immediate and overwhelming. In the days that follow, the focus often turns to one question: how did this happen? Too often, the assumption is that the driver alone is to blame, especially when only one vehicle is involved. But it is not always that simple.

While drivers must exercise caution, manufacturers also play an essential role in keeping people safe. Vehicles are designed with rollover risks in mind. Manufacturers know the dangers of these crashes and have a responsibility to ensure their vehicles can protect occupants in the event of a rollover. When they fail to do that, they must answer for the harm that results.

Many SUV models have a history of performing poorly in rollover crashes. In some cases, seatbelts fail to properly restrain occupants. In others, airbags do not deploy. Roofs can collapse, crushing the space meant to protect the people inside. When these basic safety features fail, injuries become far worse — and sometimes fatal.

While we do not have sufficient details about this incident or the SUV, a thorough investigation into all the facts can help determine whether the vehicle in question may have been defective. But surviving families should not do this alone: this requires skilled lawyers and trained professionals with extensive experience in dealing with manufacturers and defective vehicles.

We hope the family finds the answers they deserve.
