Passenger Killed, Driver Injured in Wrong-Way Semi-Truck Accident on U.S. 287 in Larimer County, Colorado

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — A 21-year-old man died, and a woman was seriously injured, on Friday morning after a wrong-way crash involving a semitruck on U.S. Highway 287. The collision occurred north of Fort Collins in the area between Larimer County Road 54G and Colorado Highway 14.

Authorities said a semitruck pulling a trailer was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 287 when it collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla.

The Toyota driver, a 20-year-old woman, had to be extricated from the vehicle. She sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The 21-year-old male passenger in the Toyota was trapped inside the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck driver faces charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, as well as driving on the wrong side of a divided highway.

After Fatal Semi-Truck Collision, Family and Injured Survivor Deserve Accountability

No one driving, following the rules of the road, expects a semi-truck to suddenly come straight at them. These collisions happen in a matter of seconds, but their impact lasts a lifetime for the survivors and for the family of the person who never made it home.

Criminal charges have now been filed against the semi-truck driver, including vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and driving on the wrong side of a divided highway. That is a start. But for the injured driver and the young man’s surviving family, it cannot be the end of the inquiry. They deserve answers and real accountability.

Questions remain. Should this driver have been on the road that morning at all? And what steps, if any, did the trucking company take to make sure this driver was fit to operate an 80,000-pound commercial vehicle?

Too often, what first appears to be a single driver’s mistake turns out to be something larger. In many head-on collision cases we have handled, the truck driver had a documented history of reckless behavior, yet the trucking company failed to intervene. No meaningful training. No supervision. No monitoring that could have prevented disaster.

In one tragic case, a man from Nebraska was driving through Kansas after a long work trip when a semi-truck attempted to pass on a two-lane road, crossed the double yellow line, and crashed head-on into his vehicle—forever changing his parents’ lives. In another, an 18-wheeler lost control on a wet, curved Texas roadway, crossed into oncoming traffic, and killed the occupant of a passenger vehicle.

These tragedies should never have happened, just like in this incident.

I hope the injured woman makes a full recovery, and for all those impacted here to find the answers and justice they deserve.
