One Killed, Three Seriously Injured in Accident with Parked Semi-truck Near New Jersey Turnpike Rest Area Exit

BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. — One person was killed, and three others suffered serious injuries in a crash on Monday near a New Jersey Turnpike rest area exit.

According to reports, a passenger vehicle was traveling northbound and exiting toward the James Fenimore Cooper Service Area when it moved onto the right shoulder.

Authorities reported that the vehicle struck the rear of a commercial truck with an attached roll-off trailer that was parked on the shoulder due to a mechanical issue. One passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car and two additional passengers were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Public roadways are not where trucks should be parked or stopped

When first hearing about collisions like this, attention often turns immediately to the passenger car and its actions. But in my experience, cases like these require closer examination. One of the most important questions is whether the truck should have been stopped on the roadside at all. A semi-truck parked in the wrong place can create a profound and unexpected danger —one that may have been entirely avoidable.

We recently represented a family whose loved one died after colliding with a parked semi-truck. Although authorities initially determined the deceased was responsible because he struck a stationary vehicle, our investigation revealed that the truck should not have been there in the first place. When the grieving family reached out to us, we focused on understanding why the truck driver had pulled over, knowing that the reason for stopping often holds critical answers about responsibility.

In that case, the truck driver said he had stopped because of a flat tire, which at first appeared to be a legitimate emergency. But our investigation showed that the tire failure was entirely preventable. The tire had been underinflated for months, weakening over time until failure was inevitable. This was not a sudden emergency — it was the predictable result of a trucking company’s failure to maintain its vehicle properly. That failure created the conditions that forced the driver to stop in a dangerous location.

By looking beyond surface-level conclusions, we uncovered corporate negligence that contributed to a tragic loss of life. The family received not only compensation but answers about what truly happened to their loved one.

The surviving family of the person who was killed, as well as those seriously injured in this crash, deserve that same level of care and attention. They deserve answers grounded in facts, not assumptions.

I hope they find the answers they need.
