One Killed, Kaleb Carder and Alexus Woodford Injured in Rollover Accident on 33rd Street, West of 84th Avenue in Jackson County, Iowa

JACKSON COUNTY, Iowa — One person was killed, and two others were injured on Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Jackson County. The incident happened on 33rd Street, west of 84th Avenue.

Authorities said a truck was traveling eastbound when the driver attempted to slow down, lost control, and rolled.

A passenger in the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, identified as  20-year-old Kaleb Carder, was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment. A second passenger, 24-year-old Alexus Woodford, was transported to a local hospital with injuries.

Vehicle Safety Features Critical in Rollover Accidents

What a terrible incident. Rollover crashes happen suddenly and violently, leaving little time to react. When they occur, attention often stays on the driver’s actions and the road conditions. That focus makes sense. But when a rollover involves a truck or an SUV, another question deserves equal attention: did the vehicle protect the people inside, or did it contribute to their injuries?

In rollover crashes, people trust the vehicle to protect them when everything else goes wrong. They expect seat belts to hold them in place, the roof not to crush in, and airbags to deploy when they are needed. No one expects these basic safety features to fail.

But sometimes they do fail. And when they do, the injuries can be far more serious than the rollover alone would explain. Failures in seat belts, roof strength, or airbags can turn a survivable crash into one that causes serious head and neck injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, and even death.

Most people (especially those impacted) do not know that many truck models have a history of failing to withstand rollovers. Police reports will explain how a rollover happened, but they do not examine whether a defective vehicle failed to protect the people inside once the crash began.

Only a careful investigation can determine whether a defect or safety failure played a role in what happened. Surviving families and injured individuals should not be left to uncover those answers on their own, especially in a period of grieving and healing.

May those injured make a full recovery, and may the families find the answers they need.
