Two Injured After Semi-Truck Accident at Intersection of U.S. Highway 83 and U.S. Highway 54 in Liberal, Kansas

LIBERAL, Kansas — Two teenagers were hospitalized Saturday morning after a semi-truck collided with their vehicles at an intersection in Liberal. The crash occurred at the junction of U.S. Highway 83 and U.S. Highway 54.

According to authorities, the teenagers were driving separate vehicles and were stopped at a red light when a semi-truck approached from behind.

Authorities stated that the driver of the semi-truck failed to stop at the traffic signal, striking the first vehicle, which was then pushed into the second vehicle.

Both drivers were identified as 18-year-olds from Liberal. Emergency crews transported both teenagers to a hospital. One of the teens was reported to have sustained serious injuries.

No additional information has been released at this time.

Drivers Injured After Semi-Truck Fails to Stop Deserve Answers

This is deeply troubling. These two young individuals did what all safe drivers do every day — they stopped at a red light. Yet they were injured when a semi-truck failed to do the same, striking them from behind.

A key question now is why the truck failed to stop. Was it a driver error or a mechanical issue? The answer matters because it will determine which parties are responsible for the harm done to these young drivers.

Access to dashcam footage, driving, maintenance, and inspection records, along with an examination of the braking system, can help determine what caused this preventable crash.

But trucking and insurance companies often move quickly—seeking early settlements or shifting blame before all the facts are known. These are situations the injured and their families should not have to face alone.

A commercial truck crash investigation takes time, access to information, and experience. Having the right support and guidance can make a real difference for injured individuals and their families who are overwhelmed and unsure where to turn next.

I hope the two young injured drivers heal and find the answers they need.
