Honda and Acura Recall Nearly 100,000 Vehicles Due to Airbag Deployment Defect

UNITED STATES — Honda is recalling nearly 100,000 vehicles after identifying a defect that could cause certain airbags to deploy when they should remain inactive, increasing the risk of injury to some passengers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves the front passenger seat’s weight sensor. Honda said a capacitor within the sensor’s circuit board can crack after prolonged exposure to humidity, potentially causing a short circuit.

If the defect occurs, the vehicle may incorrectly determine whether the front passenger airbag should deploy during a crash. As a result, the front passenger frontal and knee airbags could deploy even when an infant in a child safety seat, a child, or a smaller occupant is seated in the front passenger position.

The recall affects the following vehicles:

  • 2016-2022 Honda Civic
  • 2016-2022 Honda Accord
  • 2017-2022 Honda Accord Hybrid
  • 2017-2021 Honda Civic Hatchback
  • 2017-2018 and 2021 Honda Civic Type R
  • 2017-2022 Honda CR-V
  • 2017-2022 Honda Pilot
  • 2017-2021, 2023, and 2025 Honda Ridgeline
  • 2017-2020, 2022-2026 Acura MDX
  • 2018-2026 Honda Odyssey
  • 2018-2020 Honda Fit
  • 2018-2021 and 2023 Acura TLX
  • 2019-2021 Honda HR-V
  • 2019-2021 Honda Passport
  • 2019-2022 Honda Insight
  • 2019-2024 Acura RDX
  • 2020-2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid

Honda reported receiving 228 warranty claims related to the issue as of mid-May.

Contact The Ammons Law Firm if a Defective Airbag or Vehicle Caused Serious Injury

Airbags save lives, but they are designed to deploy under specific circumstances and for specific occupants. That is why modern vehicles use sensors to help determine whether deployment is appropriate. When those systems fail to identify who is in the seat accurately, the very safety feature intended to protect passengers can expose them to additional harm.

Children and smaller occupants are particularly vulnerable because airbags deploy with tremendous force. Families trust that a vehicle’s safety systems will recognize when an airbag should remain inactive and protect their loved ones rather than expose them to additional danger.
