Petzl Recalls Allegedly Defective Nomic and Ergonomic Ice Climbing Axes Due to Fall and Death Hazard


UNITED STATES — Petzl America has recalled certain Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes after identifying a defect that can cause the shaft to break during use. A failure of the axe during climbing could cause a climber to lose support and fall, potentially resulting in severe injuries or death.

The recall involves Petzl Nomic ice climbing axes, model U021AA00, and Ergonomic ice climbing axes, model U022AA00. The affected products feature aluminum shafts, steel picks, and reinforced plastic grips. Nomic axes are black, while Ergonomic axes are orange.

The recalled products were sold through outdoor retailers, including REI and Moosejaw Mountaineering.

Petzl has received 26 reports of ice axe shafts breaking at the handle.
