Truck Driver Jaime Lopez Killed After Semi-Truck Tire Blowout Rollover Accident on Interstate 10 Near Valencia Road in Tucson, Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — A truck driver was killed Tuesday after a reported tire failure caused his tractor-trailer to crash, overturn, and catch fire. The incident happened on Interstate 10 near Valencia Road in Tucson.

According to authorities, 62-year-old Jaime Lopez of Fontana, California, was operating a car hauler when the front passenger-side tire reportedly blew out. Witnesses who were traveling nearby said Lopez appeared to guide the truck away from surrounding traffic before it struck the median, and they believe his actions may have helped protect other motorists.

The truck moved toward the center median, struck a concrete barrier, rolled over, and became engulfed in flames.

Officials reported that the car carrier was transporting 10 vehicles, including several electric vehicles, at the time of the crash.

The tire needs to be examined to determine the cause of failure

Based on this report and other news accounts, Mr. Lopez may have helped protect other motorists from harm in the moments before the crash. Witnesses said he appeared to guide the truck away from surrounding traffic before it struck the median. What a selfless and beautiful act. Yet I am still bothered by the fact that Mr. Lopez also should have made it home safely to his family. His loved ones deserve answers about what caused this devastating crash.

Semi-truck tires can fail for many reasons, including excessive wear, road hazards, improper maintenance, or overloading. But another possibility should not be overlooked: a defective tire that never should have been on the road in the first place.

We have seen cases where a tire blowout was traced to a defect in the tire’s design or manufacturing process. In those situations, responsibility may extend beyond the trucking company and to the manufacturer that allowed a dangerous product to enter the marketplace. When that happens, those responsible should be held accountable for the harm caused.

While the cause of the tire failure in this crash remains unknown, a thorough examination by trained professionals can help determine why the blowout occurred and whether it could have been prevented.

Truck drivers depend on safe, reliable tires to travel the long distances necessary to keep goods moving across the country. When a tire fails and a driver loses his life, it is important to understand exactly what went wrong. If a defect played a role in this tragedy, those responsible should be required to answer for it. We hope that happens here.

May Mr. Lopez’s surviving family find the answers they need.
