Tesla Recalls Allegedly Defective Powerwall 2 AC Battery Systems Over Serious Injury and Death Risk

WASHINGTON – Federal safety officials have announced a recall of select Tesla Powerwall 2 AC battery systems after reports that specific units may overheat, creating a potential fire hazard that could result in severe injury or death.

According to the recall notice, lithium-ion battery cells in affected units may fail during ordinary operation. This failure can lead to excessive heat buildup and, in some cases, smoke or flames. The recalled systems are used in residential energy storage for self-consumption, time-based control, and backup power.

The recall applies to specific Powerwall 2 units identified on the product’s nameplate label. The units are wall-mounted, fully integrated AC battery systems commonly installed in homes with solar panels and other energy management equipment.

There have been at least 22 reports of overheating.
