Motorcyclist Injured After Accident with Semitruck on 3850 South just off River Road in St. George, Utah

GEORGE, Utah — A motorcyclist was transported to the hospital after a crash involving a semitruck in the Fort Pearce industrial area of St. George, Friday afternoon. The collision occurred on 3850 South just off River Road.

Police reported that a westbound motorcycle collided with a semitruck that was attempting to make a left turn into the parking lot of a Komatsu construction equipment dealership. According to St. George Police, the semitruck driver stated he looked both ways before turning but did not see the approaching motorcyclist. Authorities cited the driver for a failed left-hand turn.

Officials reported that the motorcyclist’s injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.

Commercial Truck Left-Turn Accidents: A Cause of Serious Crashes

What seems like a small mistake on the road can have devastating consequences. That’s especially true when a motorcycle and a semi are involved. Motorcycles are much smaller and offer almost no protection in a crash, which is exactly why truck drivers have to use extra caution when turning across traffic. But, unfortunately, accidents involving large trucks making left turns are common on our roadways.

It’s not enough to say, “I looked and didn’t see them.” That is not the standard. When you’re operating a commercial vehicle and making a left turn across traffic, you have to be sure the way is clear. That means looking again — and then looking again — because missing a motorcycle is not a harmless oversight. It’s a failure that can seriously injure or kill someone.

The rider in this crash was hit because that responsibility wasn’t met. A citation alone does not answer for what happened.

He deserves real accountability for the harm he suffered. We hope he’s able to recover fully in the days and weeks ahead.
