One Injured in Accident Involving Disabled Tractor-Trailers on Interstate 95 in Attleboro, Massachusetts

ATTLEBORO, Mass. —  One person was injured in a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 on Wednesday morning.

Officials said two tractor-trailers were stopped in the breakdown lane when a sedan collided with the rear of one of the trucks.

A bystander reportedly stopped and removed the driver from the vehicle and began performing CPR before first responders arrived, Attleboro fire officials said.

The driver of the sedan, identified as a 43-year-old man, was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Disabled Semi-Trucks on Active Highways Can Create Dangerous Hazards for Drivers

It’s important to understand exactly what happened here. That includes why the trucks broke down in the first place and whether proper warnings were in place for approaching drivers.

Many times, there is more to the story than the crash scene. Working on cases like this one for decades, I understand that, yes, sometimes a truck will break down, but often it is due to poor maintenance.

We have handled other crashes where someone was initially blamed after colliding with a parked semi-truck. In one such case, authorities concluded that the passenger-car driver was at fault simply because the truck was stationary. Our investigation, however, showed that the truck should never have been there in the first place.

The truck driver said he had pulled over because of a flat tire, which at first sounded like a legitimate emergency. But when we looked more closely, we learned the tire had been under-inflated for months, weakening over time and making failure almost inevitable. This was not a sudden, unavoidable emergency. It was the result of maintenance that was put off and preventable safety failures that forced the driver to stop in a dangerous location.

By looking beyond the initial conclusions, we uncovered negligence that played a direct role in the loss of life. The people affected in that crash received not only compensation but also clearer answers about what truly happened.

The man hurt in this crash deserves the same careful examination. He deserves to know whether this collision could have been prevented and whether the truck drivers and trucking companies met the safety responsibilities required of commercial operators.

We hope the driver here makes a full and fast recovery.
