Texas Truck Lawyers: Woman Killed in Accident with a Parked Semi-truck on Interstate 30 in Sulphur Springs, Texas

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas — A woman and her child died in a crash Monday morning on Interstate 30 in Sulphur Springs, according to local authorities. The incident happened on the eastbound lanes of I-30 near mile marker 127.

According to reports, a van left its lane of travel and moved onto the shoulder of the highway, where it struck the rear of a truck tractor semi-trailer.

The 35-year-old woman driving the van and her child, who was a passenger, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway Shoulders are not where trucks should be parked or stopped

Encountering a tractor‑trailer stopped on the shoulder at night is something most drivers don’t expect. These trucks are so large and so hard to see in low‑light conditions, and when one is unexpectedly stopped along the roadway, it can pose a sudden, very real danger to people approaching, as we saw here.

What makes crashes like this particularly troubling is that the initial reports do not always tell the full story.

Crash reports often place responsibility on the driver who collides with a semi-truck. But in my experience, collisions involving tractor-trailers require a closer look. A key question is why such a large commercial vehicle was in that position on the roadway in the first place.

We have represented families in similar cases where a loved one was initially blamed after colliding with a semi‑truck stopped along the roadway. In one such case, authorities concluded that the passenger‑vehicle driver was responsible simply because the truck was stationary. To the family, it felt like the story ended there, until our investigation began.

The truck driver claimed he had pulled over because of a flat tire, which initially appeared to be a legitimate emergency. But a deeper review showed the tire had been under-inflated for months, weakening it over time and making failure inevitable. What appeared to be a sudden emergency was actually the result of neglected maintenance and preventable safety failures that forced the truck to stop in a dangerous location.

By looking beyond the surface conclusions, we uncovered negligence that played a direct role in the loss of life. The family was able to obtain not only compensation but also clear answers about what truly happened.

The family affected by this crash deserves that same careful examination. They deserve to know whether this tragedy could have been prevented and whether the truck driver and trucking company met the safety responsibilities required of commercial operators.

Two lives were lost, and the people who loved them deserve to know the full story of what happened: that includes details of the truck.

May they find the truth about what happened.
