Charter Bus Driver and Passengers Injured After Tire Blowout Accident on Interstate 95 in St. John’s County, Florida

JOHNS COUNTY, Florida — A charter bus driver and multiple passengers were injured Thursday after a tire blowout caused a bus to leave the roadway on Interstate 95 near U.S. 1 in St. Johns County.

Preliminary reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate the charter bus was traveling southbound when a left-side tire suddenly blew out. The tire failure caused the bus to veer off the roadway and crash.

The 57-year-old bus driver reportedly suffered serious injuries. At least two passengers were also injured in the collision. Additional details regarding the extent of the injuries have not yet been released.

The charter bus was carrying students from Fairfield County, South Carolina, for an end-of-year school field study trip.

The cause of the tire failure has to be investigated

What should have been a fun trip and a memorable experience for these students instead turned into a terrifying crash that left multiple people injured. Incidents like this should never even happen. Those who suffered injuries and their families deserve answers.

Many factors can cause a sudden blowout. Poor maintenance. Road hazards. And poor construction or a defect in the tire’s design. We have seen many cases where a defect caused a catastrophic blowout with a tire that should never have made it on our roadways to begin with. When something like this happens, the manufacturer should be held accountable for the harm caused by their faulty product.

While the cause of the tire failure in this crash remains unknown, an investigation by trained professionals can help determine the cause of the blowout and whether it could have been prevented.

Charter bus drivers rely on safe, functioning tires to transport passengers over long distances. They have many people’s lives in their hands. So anytime a tire blows out, and people are seriously injured, we owe it to them and their family to make sure we know exactly what went wrong. We hope that happens here and that the injured parties make a full recovery and find the answers they deserve.
