Germin Manuel Killed in Tire Blowout Rollover Accident on Interstate 16 in Chatham County, Georgia

CHATHAM COUNTY, Georgia — A 48-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after a reported tire failure caused a single-vehicle rollover crash along Interstate 16.

According to authorities, Germin Manuel was traveling eastbound in the right lane of I-16 when the left rear tire of the vehicle failed. The vehicle then traveled onto the shoulder before overturning and entering a ditch containing approximately two feet of water.

Manuel died at the scene from blunt force trauma injuries sustained in the collision. Officials believe he was from South Carolina.

Vehicle Tire Must Be Examined for Potential Defects After Fatal Crash

Most drivers never imagine that a tire can suddenly fail at highway speed, and when it does, there is often little to no time to react or avoid what follows.

In single-vehicle crashes, attention often turns immediately to the driver. People may assume the driver lost control or made a mistake behind the wheel. That may be one part of an investigation, but when a tire reportedly fails, the questions cannot stop there.

Here, preliminary findings indicate that the left-rear tire failed before the vehicle overturned and entered a ditch along the interstate. That detail matters. Tires are not supposed to fail under normal highway driving conditions.

A defective tire can appear perfectly normal before suddenly coming apart. In some cases, the danger existed long before the vehicle ever reached the roadway, raising serious questions about how the tire made it through manufacturing and into public use.

Our firm has handled tire failure and defect cases for decades and has written extensively about these incidents. Even with that experience, it is still deeply troubling to see another fatal crash where a tire failure may have played a role. These crashes should not be dismissed as unavoidable accidents without first determining why the tire failed.

Germin Manuel’s family deserves clear answers about what happened and whether a defective tire contributed to this crash.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time. May they receive the answers they need.
