Ismael Galvan Killed in Work Truck Accident Near the Intersection of Northrise Drive and Avenida Carmen in Las Cruces, New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — A Las Cruces man died Friday night following a single-vehicle rollover crash near the intersection of Northrise Drive and Avenida Carmen.

Police said officers responded to reports of a rollover collision in the area. When emergency crews arrived, they discovered a white Ford work truck that had overturned.

The driver, identified as 49-year-old Ismael Galvan of Las Cruces, was the only occupant inside the vehicle. Authorities said he suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vehicles need to be checked for defects in rollover crashes

In a single-vehicle rollover, all eyes will be on the driver and road conditions. While that is a natural place to start, it is only part of the story of what could have gone wrong. To fully understand what happened, we must carefully examine the truck itself to make sure it was working as it should.  That means asking: Did this vehicle protect the driver as it should have, or did the truck cause more harm?

The truth is, some pickup trucks have not performed as safely as they should in rollover crashes. Safety features people rely on, like seatbelts, airbags, and roof strength, can sometimes fail when they are needed most. Those failures can leave occupants with life-changing injuries, including trauma to the limbs, brain, and spinal cord, and in some cases, even their lives. When a vehicle does not protect people the way it is supposed to, the manufacturer should answer for it.

Manufacturers have a legal responsibility to make sure their products are safe for the public. When they fail to meet that responsibility, and someone is harmed as a result, they should be held accountable.

But not everyone will go beyond looking at the driver’s actions or road conditions in single-vehicle truck accidents. It takes a lot of experience and knowledge with these types of incidents to know what to look for and what questions to ask.

When a family loses their loved one, they have every right to want to know what exactly happened and what went wrong. They have a right to want to seek more answers.

I hope Mr. Galvan’s family finds the answers they need.
