Three Killed in Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving Two Semi-Trucks on Interstate-44 in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Three people were killed Thursday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 44 in Oklahoma City. The incident happened near Southwest 119th Street.

Authorities said a semi-truck traveling north failed to slow down with traffic and struck the vehicle directly ahead. The impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles.

One of the vehicles caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames following the collision.

Police confirmed that three people were killed in the crash.

Failure to Slow for Traffic Leads to Deadly Semi-Truck Crash on I-44 in Oklahoma City

What a tragic incident. And entirely preventable. Failing to adjust or anticipate changes in traffic conditions is dangerous and inexcusable, especially for a commercial driver.

We recently took on a case involving a devastating truck crash in Texas, where a semi-truck failed to slow down and violently rear-ended a family’s vehicle, causing a chain-reaction collision and fatal results, in which innocent people lost their lives.

Our investigation in that matter uncovered failures that went beyond the actions of the truck driver. We alleged that the trucking company failed to train its driver and to properly maintain safety. We also alleged that the company that sold the truck failed to inform the trucking company about available collision-avoidance technology that could have helped prevent the crash.

That experience is why I would want to know more about what happened before this semi-truck struck traffic on I-44. Was the driver paying attention as traffic began to slow? How fast was the truck traveling before the collision? Were the brakes and other safety systems working properly? What do the truck’s electronic data and driver records reveal about the moments leading up to impact?

Three people lost their lives here. Their families deserve to know why this truck failed to slow down and whether any failures beyond the driver’s actions contributed to what happened. Those responsible should be held accountable for the lives that were lost.

May the surviving families find the answers they need.
