GM Tire Defects

GM Tire Recalls & Defects

During the first couple of weeks of January 2015, General Motors (GM) recalled 6,000 2015 SUVs when it was discovered that the Goodyear tires on the vehicles could experience tread cracking. Goodyear’s internal testing revealed that wear and tear could cause small cracks in the tire tread to form. This type of cracking can result in a loss of tire pressure and/or tire failure. Both increase the risk of a crash.

The campaign covered over 48,500 18-inch Goodyear tires with 32,000 of those being made specifically for GM to either be installed on vehicles or to be sold as replacement tires. The tires on these vehicles failed to comply with the safety requirements of FMVSS No. 110, which refers to the selection of tires for a vehicle that is 4,536kgs (10,00lbs) or less.

GM Announces Stop-Sale

In light of the potential danger posed by these tires, GM decided to stop selling all affected vehicles:

  • The 2015 GMC Acadia (manufactured between December 9, 2014 and January 16, 2015)
  • The 2015 Chevrolet Traverse (manufactured between December 9, 2014 and January 20, 2015)
  • The 2015 Buick Enclave (manufactured between December 9, 2014 and January 14, 2015)

Those who are concerned that their vehicle may still be affected should call the customer support line for Buick, Chevrolet, or GMC, depending on the make and model of their vehicle.
