Springfield, Ill. — At approximately 9:25 p.m. on Friday in central Illinois, a semi-truck carrying anhydrous ammonia overturned, spilling over half of its 7,500-gallon (28,390-liter) cargo.

The incident resulted in five fatalities, five serious injuries, and the evacuation of hundreds of local residents.

Authorities have refrained from discussing the specific causes of death. Emergency response teams and environmental agencies are working diligently to manage the ammonia leak and ensure the safety of area residents.
