he tragic story of how the most widely used herbicide to kill weeds in the nation turned out to be a toxic cancer-causing chemical continues, as Monsanto Company is facing thousands of lawsuits across the United States.
In 2015, a World Health Organization (WHO) report concluded that the main ingredient in Monsanto Company’s (acquired by Bayer in 2018) weed killer product Roundup, was a human carcinogen. Exposed individuals allege Roundup and it’s lead ingredient, Glyphosate, caused them to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The first trial against Monsanto ended on August 10, 2018 with a unanimous jury verdict of $289 million for a Bay Area school district groundskeeper, Dewayne “Lee” Johnson. The Johnson case is currently on appeal in the California State Court of Appeals.
The second case to go to trial ended with an $80 million-dollar verdict on behalf of Edwin Hardeman and the third case to go to trial against Monsanto resulted in a $2 billion dollar verdict on behalf of an elderly couple who both developed cancer after exposure to Roundup.
After the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized intergovernmental agency of WHO issued its final assessment on Glyphosate and its toxicity to humans exposed to it, Monsanto responded that both the chemical and Roundup do not pose a health hazard to humans.
Due to Monsanto’s insistence that Glyphosate and Roundup are safe, individuals who work in agriculture, landscaping, and even home users are continuing to be exposed to the toxic carcinogen. Following the IARC’s assessment, The Ammons Law Firm believe a solid basis exists showing exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides may lead to health complications, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma or one of its other 30 subtypes. Exposure to these chemicals can occur in several different ways, including inhalation and direct skin contact.
