Automotive Manufacturers Create “Airbag Recall Repair Month” to Raise Awareness

Deployed Airbag

The Takata airbag recall has been the largest automotive recall in history to date, found in millions of vehicles in various makes and models manufactured by 19 different automakers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there are currently still 1.7 million vehicles on the road in Texas alone with these dangerous airbags that need to be replaced. Airbag experts have urged drivers with recalled airbags to get them replaced immediately, due to their tendency to explode in high temperatures and humid climates.

In order to raise awareness of this issue, FCA US LLC, local Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and Ram dealerships designated the month of September as “Airbag Recall Repair Month” in Texas and for the month of October in California. Safety officials have created this campaign across multiple states as a result of this airbag recall they consider “urgent.” All drivers are able to check if their vehicle is a part of this recall, regardless of the make and model of their car, by following two easy steps:

  1. Identify your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). This information can typically be found on the driver’s side dashboard or on your registration and insurance documents.
  2. Visit www.checktoprotect.org or www.safercar.gov and type in their VIN number to know immediately if they have a recall on their vehicle.

If your vehicle is listed as a part of this recall, you are able to schedule an appointment for a free repair and replacement at your local dealership. Some dealerships are even offering extended hours and alternative transportation for drivers while their vehicles are being repaired.

In addition to the millions of airbags already recalled, the NHTSA has warned that yet another recall for the Takata airbags is scheduled to be announced in December of 2019. This announcement will increase the number of affected airbags to roughly 70 million since the recall began back in 2013.
