IOWA CITY, Iowa—A young man was killed around 2:15 a.m. on October 29, 2022, after colliding with a semi-truck at 280th Street in the southbound lane of Highway 1, three miles north of Iowa City.
Police reports suggest that a semi-truck driver attempting to make a U-turn at the intersection of Highway 1 and 280th street blocked the southbound lane of the highway. The 22-year-old driver of a Ford Taurus struck the semi-truck as it turned and was fatally injured.
An investigation into the crash is underway. No further details are available to the public.
Employers may prevent similar accidents by educating drivers about turning maneuvers
While it may be easy to think the 22-year-old driver was distracted and failed to see the semi-truck making a U-turn in the middle of an intersection, other facts may highlight the truck driver's negligence. Indeed, semi-truck drivers should not be encouraged to perform dangerous turning maneuvers in the middle of busy roadways. Commercial trucking companies may be liable for the damages caused by their employees when attempting a risky turn.
Trucking companies must ensure their drivers are provided with adequate education on roadway safety, traffic rules, and evasive driving to avoid collisions. If trucking companies fail to educate their drivers about the proper procedure when making a turn, they can be held accountable for injuries caused by drivers performing dangerous maneuvers.
Likewise, victims and families of those killed in crashes may obtain compensation from negligent truck drivers and their employers, and these lawsuits are often settled with insurance money from the company. Thus, grieving families must not give up on pursuing legal remedies to help alleviate the financial burden associated with an unexpected loss of life.
To that end, crash victims' families typically benefit from a consultation with a personal injury lawyer. At The Ammons Law Firm, we can oversee an independent investigation into the cause of the accident to determine whether another driver or, perhaps, an employer may be responsible for the outcome of an accident. In addition to obtaining compensation for devastated families to rebuild their lives, we also recognize how these cases can send a clear message to employers.
