Two injured in a multi-vehicle crash with a dump truck on I-20 in Van, Texas.

VAN, Texas—On October 27, 2022, two individuals were injured in a crash involving a dump truck on I-20 in Van, Texas. The accident occurred in the morning hours near Farm to Market Road 314.

Initial reports indicate that at least two vehicles, including a large dump truck, were involved in the collision. Photographs from the crash depict an overturned dump truck with the contents of its load scattered into the lanes of travel.

Two of the crash victims were transported to a nearby hospital. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and no further information is available now.

Independent investigation may reveal other responsible parties for this accident

When an accident involves multiple vehicles, especially large trucks, it may be more complicated to determine the cause of the crash. Here, for instance, there may be many plausible explanations of what caused the dump truck and Subaru to collide. While it may be easy to assume that either driver was distracted, driver error only accounts for a portion of all crashes on our roadways. Additionally, dump truck drivers employed by companies should receive regular education about how to operate the truck safely, so a lack of education may have contributed to the crash. Finally, the accident may have resulted from a mechanical or technical failure on the dump truck or Subaru.

Manufacturers of cars and large dump trucks are obliged to design and build their vehicles to minimize the risk of serious injury to drivers. For example, suppose a manufacturer places a fuel line somewhere with a high likelihood of being struck and catching fire. In that case, the manufacturer may be partially liable for injuries sustained in a fire after a collision. Similarly, suppose driver assistance technology on a newer model Subaru fails to alert a driver of the presence of another vehicle in a blind spot. In that case, Subaru may be responsible for a resulting accident. Our firm has handled many cases against vehicle manufacturers, often resulting in crash victims receiving compensation for their injuries.

Companies that employ dump truck drivers often carry insurance to compensate victims, as well, especially when companies have failed to provide drivers with proper educational resources regarding safe driving. In the U.S., the law allows employers to be held responsible for employees' actions. So, if the dump truck driver fails to see the SUV due to a lack of training from an employer, the victims may seek remedy from the company.

As is somewhat apparent, accidents involving multiple vehicles and large trucks can create a complex situation for victims aiming to obtain compensation for their pain and suffering. We recommend crash victims consult with an attorney who may conduct an independent investigation into the crash to identify all potentially responsible parties and the various avenues by which compensation may be sought.
