COLLEGE PARK, Georgia – College Park police released Information on a fatal multi-vehicle accident that resulted in one death and four injuries on Interstate 285.
According to police, Jose Canelones was killed in the multi-vehicle accident. The crash started after a semi-truck lost its cargo, causing a three-vehicle accident. Following the crash, Jose Canelones got out of his vehicle and was struck by another motorist, causing his death.
Authorities reported four others suffered injuries in the crash and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The identities of the injured victims were not released.
What caused the cargo to fall off the truck was not immediately apparent. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
Mr. Canelones was an innocent victim of someone’s negligence. The at-fault parties must be held accountable.
This was clearly a preventable crash. Cargo must be properly secured to prevent this very type of crash from occurring. When trucking and shipping companies fail to do their job right, this is what happens. The family of the deceased deserves the opportunity to hold all wrongdoers accountable for their actions.
There are likely many parties responsible for this crash. It is immediately apparent that the truck driver that was hauling the cargo that fell from the truck bears some fault. Truck drivers are responsible under federal law to ensure their loads are properly secured. Failure to adhere to this basic rule of safety can and does result in fatal collisions on a routine basis. Such negligence cannot go unanswered.
It appears the driver of the vehicle that struck Mr. Canelones is also partially to blame for what happened. We do not know all the facts, so we cannot make any firm determination, but the clearly holds drivers that hit other people accountable for the harm caused by their actions. Whether the driver was distracted, fatigued, or simply could not see the prior crash remains to be seen.
On top of the two apparent parties, the people responsible for loading the truck may also share some blame. Shipping and loading companies must perform their job duties in a way that protects others from serious risks of harm. When this does not happen, people are seriously injured. The actions of the parties responsible for loading the truck will need to be investigated by good truck accident attorneys to determine exactly what happened.
I am deeply saddened that an innocent life was lost because people did not do their job correctly, and I pray that the family will receive the peace they need during this difficult time. I also hope those that are responsible here quickly accept responsibility and provide this family with the answers they need to move forward.
