Mitsubishi Recalls Vehicles for Stalling Risk

Mitsubishi began a recall of more than 141,000 cars and SUVs because of a part in the vehicles that can break and cause the engine to stall. The recall covers the 2009-2012 Lancer, 2008-2012 Lancer Sportback, and 2011-2012 Outlander Sport vehicles equipped with either a 4B11 or 4B12 engine.

What’s the Problem?

The drive belt automatic tensioner flange in these vehicles may crack, allowing the accessory drive belt to detach. The purpose of the drive belt is to deliver power between different engine components. They work by means of friction between the belt and pulley, which is why loose belts can cause various components to work poorly, or not at all. If the drive belts in the recalled vehicles detach, the vehicle’s battery will discharge and the engine will stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix

Dealers will replace the belt tensioner free of charge. Mitsubishi says the new part should have an improved shape. According to NHTSA, the recall is expected to begin March 27, 2018. Mitsubishi’s own number for this recall is SR-18-001.
