Gas Explosion at Bar 5015 Shakes Houston Museum District

Officials Investigate the Cause of Fire and Gas Explosion

Early in the morning on Friday, June 12th, an explosion at Bar 5015 in the Houston Museum District shook the surrounding homes and damaged several properties, including Alfreda’s Soul Food and a nearby barbecue food truck. Although no injuries have been reported yet, the explosion destroyed the local bar and left debris scattered throughout the area. Some neighboring apartment owners also reported that their windows had been shattered with the force of the explosion.

Because the bar closed at 11 p.m. the night before and the explosion did not occur until around 4:45 am on Friday morning, officials do not believe that anyone was inside the building at the time of the explosion. However, it is still unclear whether this incident was accidental or intentional. It is also not confirmed whether gas was actually the core cause of the explosion or just an accelerating factor.

The police and other officials have stated that while there is a faint odor of natural gas lingering in the air, it’s unlikely that there’s a significant safety threat to the public. Motorists and pedestrians are nonetheless discouraged from visiting until the investigation is over and the area is confirmed to be safe.
