Kenneth Crouchman dies in US-75 accident involving U-Haul truck

GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas — Kenneth Crouchman, a 78-year-old driver, died Dec. 11 after he collided with a rental U-Haul truck just north of Farm-to-Market Road 121 on U.S. Highway 75.

Crouchman was southbound on the US 75 service road in a red Volkswagen Beetle when he allegedly failed to yield to a northbound U-Haul truck and collided with the vehicle as it was merging onto the highway, according to a local news report.

Crouchman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the driver of the rental U-Haul or the ongoing crash investigation.

Commentary on the fatal U-Haul accident that took the life of Kenneth Crouchman

I was saddened to learn of the tragic crash that has ended the life of elderly Kenneth Crouchman. Mr. Crouchman appears to have failed to yield as he merged onto the highway and collided with the U-Haul. Authorities have not noted whether the U-Haul was loaded or empty. Either way, a Volkswagen Beetle is no match for a U-Haul. The car is not engineered to withstand such force of impact. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. Crouchman in this sensitive time of grief.

Experience has taught me to hold judgment until after a detailed investigation has been conducted. In this case, many might jump to the conclusion Mr. Crouchman was negligent when he failed to yield while entering the highway. However, there may have been latent factors causing the accident, and other factors contributing to the injury.

For instance, seatback failure often occurs when a vehicle is rear-ended, exasperating the vehicle’s occupant’s injuries. On the other hand, the box truck may have merged into the lane the very moment Mr. Crouchman was merging. Whenever a fatal accident occurs, it is important to conduct an independent investigation of the accident to determine exactly what happened.
