1 KILLED IN CRASH ON ROUTE 15 IN STURBRIDGE

WORCESTER COUNTY, Mass. — A driver died Jan. 9 after crashing his vehicle on Route 15, just south of River Road in Sturbridge.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim’s vehicle was northbound on Route 15 and passing a vehicle in the passing zone when the driver lost control, left the roadway, and collided with several trees. A 911 caller reported that the victim’s vehicle veered off the road and into adjacent woods.

The victim, who officials have not identified, was reportedly trapped in the vehicle when law enforcement arrived on the scene. First responders rescued him and transported him to Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge, where he sadly succumbed to injuries.

An investigation into the accident is underway. No additional details have been released.

Commentary on Sturbridge Accident Causing Death of 1

Worcester County Car AccidentI am saddened to learn of this accidental death resulting from the driver’s loss of control. I find it alarming the driver was unable to maintain the lane of travel while actively passing another vehicle. From my experience, drivers’ minds are highly engaged when conducting a hazardous activity such as passing another vehicle.

Details leading to the accident are sparse while we await further information from authorities. I have to wonder what happened to cause this driver to lose control. Many folks may look at this accident and assume the driver was distracted or impaired. However, having investigated accidents similar to this across the nation, I know control is often lost due to mechanical failure. Automobiles malfunction far more often than most folks realize. Specializing in product defect law, I am called across the nation to represent victims of accidents caused by factors outside their control. Is this case one of those accidents? It is not out of the question.

Was there a medical emergency that rendered the driver unconscious? Did a tire blowout render driver’s inputs futile? Was there a mechanical failure that resulted in a complete loss of control? Or did the driver miscalculate and lose control at an inopportune time? A detailed investigation conducted by trained professionals will provide answers to these questions.

I extend my condolences to the family of the deceased and hope for their comfort during the difficult journey before them.
