DOUGHERTY COUNTY, Georgia—John and Alyssa Jewell-Barrett tragically died March 19 in a fiery crash on southbound Interstate 75 near Valdosta.
Local authorities said the victims were traveling in a tractor-trailer that rear-ended a southbound car in the right lane of the highway at about 10:42 p.m. The impact caused the car and tractor-trailer to cross southbound I-75 and strike a traffic barrier wall. The tractor-trailer sandwiched the car between the tractor-trailer and the wall.
State troopers said the tractor-trailer’s fuel tank was punctured during the crash, causing both it and the car to catch fire.
John and Alyssa Jewell-Barrett were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the car was flown to a Florida hospital for treatment of severe burns. He is reportedly in stable condition.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing. No additional information was immediately available.
