One Person Died, and Another Seriously Injured in an Accident Between a Semi-truck and a Sedan on State Highway 175 in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin

Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin — An accident between a semi-truck and a sedan left one person dead and another seriously injured on State Highway 175 in Fond du Lac County.

According to reports, the semi-tractor trailer was backing into a driveway off State Highway 175 when a sedan collided with the trailer, becoming trapped underneath it.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the sedan sustained severe injuries and was airlifted from the scene for medical attention. The driver of the semi-tractor trailer emerged from the crash unharmed.

No further information is available.

Thoughts on Crashes Caused by Backing Trucks

One cannot automatically assume one party is responsible for a crash. Because commercial trucks have many blind spots, truck drivers need to take proper precautions when backing to avoid a collision. Looking twice, checking and adjusting mirrors, taking time, using spotters, and minimizing distractions can help prevent backing accidents like this one. Did the truck driver involved in this accident follow these precautions? The family of the deceased deserves to know.

This crash is even more troubling because the sedan became trapped underneath the truck. Underride collisions are among the deadliest types of accidents involving large trucks. These crashes cause serious and fatal injuries because of the height difference between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle. Trucking companies can prevent many of these accidents by having underride guards on their trucks. Did this truck have any underride protection? If not, the manufacturer of the trailer may be partially responsible for the fatal injuries suffered here.

My hope in all this is that the family of the deceased receives answers rightfully owed to them. And if any wrongdoing is found, may the injured party and the surviving family of the deceased get the justice they deserve.
