RACELAND, La. —15-year-old Angel Acevedo of Houma passed away from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident earlier this month.
The fatal incident occurred on July 9 on U.S. Highway 90. Acevedo was a passenger in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by another minor. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle’s back tire failed, causing the driver to lose control. The SUV veered off the highway and rolled over.
Acevedo was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries. Three other young passengers were injured in the incident, with details of their conditions not yet disclosed.
The Tire Needs To Be Inspected For Defects.
Crashes caused by tire failure must be investigated to ensure the tire manufacturer does not escape liability when the failure is caused by poor manufacturing. Tires fail because of defects on a routine basis. Manufacturers that produce defective tires should be held responsible for the consequences of their failures.
Defective tire failures are especially dangerous because they often result in tread separation. A vehicle with a tread separation tire failure is very difficult to control, often leading to rollovers in SUVs and lightweight pickup trucks. This crash is very similar to many others we have handled involving vehicles that suffered a tread separation tire failure caused by manufacturing defects in the tire.
There is not enough information available to determine why this tire failed. The tire and all its tread pieces will need to be inspected to determine what happened. If the tire failed because of a defect caused by the manufacturer, the family should be provided with this information so they can decide whether they want to bring a wrongful death claim against the manufacturer.
This is a heartbreaking loss of a young man, and I am deeply saddened for this family. I offer my condolences and pray they might receive the comfort and support they need during this time of grief.
