Donald M. Eckel was killed in a truck accident on US 20 in Sandusky County

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OHIO – 74-year-old Donald M. Eckel of Pemberville was killed in a two-vehicle accident involving a semi-truck, according to information released by OSHP.

The accident occurred around 6:30 AM when a semi-truck driven by a 56-year-old Michigan man attempted to turn left onto US 20 from a gas station parking lot, cutting off Eckel’s vehicle. Eckel, who was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry, crashed into the semi-truck.

No further information was immediately available.

This is a tragic accident that will undoubtedly leave a family mourning the death of their beloved husband and father. Further information is needed before any firm conclusion can be drawn, but experience suggests the trucker did not see the car coming. Commercial drivers have a duty to the motoring public to exercise extreme caution while operating a commercial vehicle to avoid these preventable tragedies. And although the trucker likely did not intend to harm another, this crash cannot be undone, and the family should be provided the opportunity to receive the answers they desire from the trucker and his company if they so choose. This may take the form of agreed policy changes at the corporate level to ensure company drivers are more careful in the future and/or financial compensation for the suffering they must endure.

I extend my deepest condolences to the Eckel family during this difficult time of grief and offer my faith that they will be reunited again in the future.
