Two killed in truck accident at intersection of U.S. 30 and Lincolnway, Columbia City

WHITLEY COUNTY, Indiana – Two people were killed after a semi-truck crashed into the back of their vehicle.

According to reports, a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle crashed at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Lincolnway in Columbia City. The exact cause of the crash was not immediately known, but preliminary investigations show the semi-truck ran into the back of the passenger vehicle.

Authorities reported on Thursday that the driver and passenger of the vehicle were killed in the crash, while the trucker was not injured.

No further information was immediately available.

The trucking company and driver in charge of the truck should be held accountable

This is a senseless crash that has left two wholly innocent motorists dead. From the reported facts, the two deceased victims did nothing wrong in this collision, while the driver of the semi-truck failed to operate the truck with sufficient care and crashed into another vehicle. Whatever the cause of the crash may be, such actions are unacceptable. It will be important to have the accident investigated by trained attorneys to ensure the full extent of wrongdoing is accounted for.

Investigating the cause of the crash will determine the full extent of wrongdoing so future accidents such as this one can be avoided. While it seems clear from the authorities’ preliminary investigation that the trucker caused this crash, it will be important to determine if the actions of any other party contributed.

For instance, if the trucker’s brakes did not function properly, the company responsible for maintaining the truck may bear partial responsibility for this crash. Likewise, the actions of the employing company will need to be examined to determine whether this trucker should have been on the road in the first place and, if not, why the company permitted a dangerous driver behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle.

Over the years, our firm has found that many cases involving blatant negligence, such as the one we have here, are the result of a dangerous company culture. A company that does not care about safety employs drivers that do not care about safety. Such companies should not be permitted to operate trucks on public roadways and risk the lives of innocent motorists in pursuit of profit. Revealing dangerous companies is one way to ensure accidents like this one are prevented in the future, providing safer roadways for all motorists.

I extend my deepest condolences to all affected by this terrible crash and hope for their continued strength and support during this difficult time of grief.
