Howard County, Texas — A multi-vehicle collision on FM 33 resulted in the death of a semi-truck driver and several injured motorists.
The accident took place Thursday night when, according to reports, a 2003 Freightliner with a trailer traveling east failed to maintain a single lane, leading to a sideswipe of a westbound 2015 Freightliner with a trailer. The 2003 Freightliner continued to travel in the westbound direction and had a head-on collision with a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. The collision caused the 2003 Freightliner to jack-knife in the middle of the roadway, where a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu rear-ended the truck.
Fernando Alvarez, the driver of the 2003 Freightliner, was declared deceased at the scene. Six people were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

Thoughts on semi-trucks and head-on collisions
What a terrible accident that leaves us with many questions. For one, what caused the 2003 Freightliner to lose control and sideswipe the other truck? Motorists should not have other vehicles enter their lane of traffic and sideswipe them or crash into them head-on —this is unacceptable. Answers to these questions will help determine all wrongdoing and wrongdoers in this accident.
We need to know if the deceased truck driver was distracted, speeding, impaired, or fatigued, causing him to enter another motorist’s lane. In addition, the deceased driver’s family deserves answers. Did the truck have a mechanical issue? Mechanical problems cause 10 percent of truck accidents on our roadways. The trucking company may be held responsible if the truck did suffer a mechanical problem. Many times, employers tend to ignore or prolong issues the truck may have to save money. These unsafe practices place everyone on the road at risk of serious injury or death. When these trucking companies choose to save money over safety, and someone is seriously hurt or killed, the company must be held accountable for their negligent actions.
Multi-vehicle accidents can get complex. May all the details and facts come out so all the people this incident hurt can get the justice they deserve.
