Thoughts on Left Turn Semi-Truck Fatal Accident
Another preventable accident involving a large truck making a left turn. These accidents happen too often, and steps must be taken to prevent them. Fatal intersection crashes are most likely caused by left-turning vehicles (Department of Transportation), and large trucks, in particular, are more prone to these deadly collisions because of their length, weight, and size. For this reason, trucks must stay vigilant when turning and follow basic road rules to ensure motorists’ safety.
Truckers have to deal with blind spots, spatial reasoning, speed judgments, and ongoing traffic when turning left. This requires an attentive, experienced driver who can safely maneuver the truck and share the lanes with other motorists. When a truck driver is distracted, speeding, inexperienced, or careless, they can delay reaction time and place motorists in a dangerous environment. Inattentiveness on the road can lead to disastrous consequences. Truckers who choose to drive negligently should be held responsible for any serious injuries or deaths they cause.
Trucking companies may also share partial fault when their drivers’ actions cause devastating wrecks. Before allowing their employees to share the roadways with other motorists, trucking companies must ensure their drivers have enough experience to maneuver intersection turns safely. Plus, employers have an obligation to vet drivers and to provide traffic law safety training. Trucking companies must take everyone’s safety seriously.
My hope is for all the details of this deadly accident to continue to come out and for the negligent parties to be held responsible.
