MOROCCO, Ind. – Thursday morning, at approximately 10:55 a.m. on US 41, a westbound semi-truck failed to yield to a southbound motor home, causing the motor home to collide with the rear of the semi-truck, which then caused both vehicles to propel into another semi-truck at a stop sign.
The passenger of the motor home was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motor home’s driver was life-flighted to a Chicago hospital with severe injuries.
Both semi-truck drivers declined medical treatment.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Thoughts on Truck That Failed to Yield, Leading to Fatality and Serious Injury of Couple
Whether due to lack of experience, distraction, or disregard, large trucks continue to cause accidents by ignoring basic safety traffic rules like yielding the right-of-way. In 2018 alone, trucks failing to yield caused 226 fatalities ( Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). Truckers who cause serious injuries or death by violating safety road laws need to be held accountable for their negligent actions.
In addition, trucking companies may share fault when their drivers cause serious or fatal accidents. Trucking companies have a duty to the motorist public to place safe drivers on the roadways. They can do this by vetting their drivers better, providing traffic law safety training, and maintaining a company culture where safety comes before profits. When truck companies take a lighthearted approach to safety, their negligent actions can also make them liable if their truckers cause a serious or fatal accident.
I hope trained professionals will investigate this tragic accident to its fullest so all wrongdoers who have fault will be held accountable.
