Hyundai Elantra HEV Recall Following Unintended Acceleration


Houston, Texas – Hyundai Motor America has issued a voluntary safety recall affecting 37,997 of its 2021-2023 Elantra HEV vehicles. The recall is in response to a critical software error that may result in unintended acceleration after releasing the brake pedal, posing a significant safety risk to drivers and passengers.

The safety issue in question pertains to the Elantra HEV’s motor control unit software. The software may malfunction, causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally. This unexpected acceleration increases the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

Starting on October 17, 2023, Hyundai will send notification letters to all affected vehicle owners. These letters will contain instructions on how to address the issue. Authorized Hyundai dealerships will perform the necessary motor control unit software update to rectify the software error. This service will be provided free of charge to all affected owners.
