Thoughts on stopped semi-trucks
What a tragedy. Our sincere thoughts are with the loved ones of this young woman. Those left to mourn have a right to demand answers, including why a commercial was stopped on the roadway. These accidents continue to occur with alarming frequency, and we must do more to prevent them from happening again.
Of particular concern is the indication that the semi-truck may have experienced some sort of mechanical issue since the truck operator was found working on it. Was this truck unstable before being allowed on the road? This is a very important question. If the truck had not been stopped, no crash would have occurred.
Trucking companies are responsible for the routine maintenance of their trucks to ensure that their vehicles are in proper working order and do not pose a hazard on the road.
Unfortunately, some companies prioritize cost-saving measures over safety, neglecting essential maintenance procedures. In one case we recently handled, a commercial truck parked on the side of the road due to a worn tire that the company should have replaced. Instead, the company opted for temporary fixes until the tire ultimately failed and created a dangerous condition for passing motorists, eventually leading to a fatal crash. Such practices are unacceptable, and the company was held accountable for the harm they caused.
Trained professionals will need to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if negligence contributed to this young woman losing her life. Her loved ones deserve answers and justice if wrongdoing is found.
