2 People Killed, 1 Critically Injured in Crash Involving Overturned Semi-Truck on I-15 near Payson, Utah

Payson, Utah — Two people died, and one person was critically injured in a collision between an overturned semi-truck and a Honda Civic.

The incident took place near milepost 248 on I-15 Thursday morning.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the incident happened when the semi-truck drifted off the roadway. In an attempt to correct the course and re-enter the interstate, the driver lost control, causing the truck to roll onto its side, blocking the two northbound lanes of I-15.

Unaware of the overturned semi, a northbound Honda Civic collided with its trailer.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the Civic died at the scene. A back-seat passenger in the Honda was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver of the semi-truck sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

Names have not been released.

Thoughts on fatal semi-truck accidents

Incidents like these lead to questions about what led to the loss of control by the semi-truck. Was it speed, fatigue, distraction, impairment, or another factor? Understanding the cause is essential, considering the loss of life, pain and suffering for the surviving families, life-changing injuries, and overwhelming medical expenses for the injured party.

Truck drivers must adhere to specific rules outlined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to ensure their and others’ safety on the road. This includes driving according to current traffic conditions, no texting or distractions, and no driving past federal limits to prevent tiredness and falling asleep on the road.

The families of those who lost their lives in this tragic event rightfully deserve answers, and an independent investigation is crucial to uncover the facts. Identifying wrongdoing and holding those responsible accountable ensures safer roadways for all.
