Amanda Smrcina Dies in an Accident with a Parked Semi-Truck Near Highway 49 in Marathon County in Hatley, Wisconsin

Hatley, Wisconsin – A woman died when her vehicle collided with an unoccupied straight truck parked on the shoulder near State Highway 49. The woman, identified as Amanda Lynn Smrcina, was pronounced dead at the crash site.

The incident took place Saturday night.

No further details have been provided.

Parking a truck on the side of a highway is very dangerous

A semi-truck parked next to a highway in the middle of the night is dangerous, and the trucking industry knows this should not happen. Unfortunately, parked semis on roadways are a growing problem. If a trucker has no choice but to park their truck (due to a mechanical issue), they must ensure that special rules are followed and that every possible precaution is taken to protect passing motorists.

However, we have handled a lot of these types of accidents over the years, and we have found that even mechanical problems may not be an excuse for a trucker leaving a truck unattended next to a highway. In cases that we have handled, we have found that a lot of the mechanical issues that caused the breakdown were caused by the trucking company failing to maintain the truck in the first place.

Trucking companies cannot neglect their duties to maintain and repair their trucks, let them break down on the side of the road, and then blame the other motorists when a crash occurs because of the dangerous situations they created when they failed to maintain their vehicles.

An investigation can bring light to why this disabled truck was on the roadway. If trained professionals determine a mechanical issue or driver negligence is to blame, the trucking company may share fault along with the trucker.

The family of the deceased deserves to know what caused this accident and whether it could have been prevented. They also deserve accountability from those who have caused them pain and suffering.
