Jean Pierre Brownell Dies in a Semi-truck accident on I-80 in North Platte, Nebraska

North Platte, Nebraska — A collision between a semi and a pickup truck claimed the life of one person. The incident unfolded on Interstate 80 on Wednesday night.

According to reports, a semi-truck heading north attempted to turn left onto the westbound on-ramp when a pickup truck driven by 51-year-old Jean Pierre Brownell collided with the right side of the semi.

Brownell was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi did not suffer any injuries.

Updates will be provided as they become available.

Thoughts on semi-trucks and deadly turns

Understanding the events that led to the collision is not only a matter of closure for the grieving family but is necessary to hold any wrongdoing accountable.

Truckers need to exercise safe driving decisions, particularly when executing maneuvers like sudden turns. Being attentive to their surroundings, understanding blind spots, adjusting speed, and avoiding distractions are practices that ensure the safety of everyone on the roadways. Truckers who fail to follow these basic safety rules need to be held accountable when fatal or severe collisions occur.

The trucking companies also share responsibility for placing safe and knowledgeable drivers on the road who adhere to federal rules and regulations. Accountability starts at the top. A trucking company that does not train its drivers or hires bad drivers creates an environment where others will be hurt.

There is not enough information currently available to know all that happened leading to this tragic crash. An independent investigation by professionals is an important step in providing answers to the surviving family. As facts are discovered, answers will be found, and justice for those involved will follow.
