Mark Gillespie Suffers Life-Threatening Burns in Explosion at Meridian Magnesium Plant in Eaton Rapids, Michigan

Eaton Rapids, MI —  An auto parts worker faced life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the hospital after an explosion and fire at the Meridian Magnesium Products factory in Eaton Rapids.

Mark Gillespie sustained burns on 50 percent of his head and body and is in stable condition but not doing well.

Three people were injured in the explosion.

Meridian is a global manufacturer of die-cast automotive parts and has not issued a statement regarding the cause of the accident.

Workers have reported frequent fires at the Meridian factory, with the company receiving 18 OSHA citations for safety violations. Most of these citations are labeled as “Serious,” in the 2018 incident, where the company contested the citations, Meridian was fined $7,000.

Thoughts on workplace factory explosions

The recent incident at the Meridian Magnesium Products factory in Eaton Rapids raises serious workplace safety concerns.

This explosion is not an isolated incident, as reports indicate that the Meridian factory has a history of frequent fires and citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for safety violations, most of which are classified as “Serious.”

One question that arises is the effectiveness of safety protocols in place at the Meridian Magnesium Products factory. An independent investigation is important to address these concerns and protect workers’ well-being.

This investigation should aim to uncover the adequacy of existing safety procedures, evaluate what measures are being taken to safeguard workers and determine why a company with a history of safety violations has not rectified these issues.

The injured deserves answers.
