One Person Killed After a Semi-truck Crashed Head-on into a Pickup Truck on County Road 27 and County Road 94 Near Woodland, California

Woodland, California — One person died on Thursday when a big rig and a pickup truck collided head-on in the vicinity of County Road 27 and County 94.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the semi-truck veered off the road onto the right shoulder when the driver overcorrected, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming pickup truck.

The pickup driver died of their injuries.

Preliminary findings suggest that alcohol and drugs are suspected to be contributing factors in the tragic incident.

Thoughts on truck drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs

It is disconcerting to learn that alcohol and drugs contributed to this tragic event. As the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations outline, truck drivers are prohibited from performing any safety-sensitive functions if their alcohol concentration is 0.04 or greater. Even a lower concentration, ranging from 0.02 to less than 0.04, warrants removal from duty for a period of 24 hours. These regulations are in place to ensure the safety of all road users.

Truck drivers have a duty to drive responsibly, and trucking companies share the responsibility of maintaining a safe environment on our roads. Routine testing for alcohol and drugs is crucial to upholding safety standards in the trucking industry. Additionally, trucking companies have to thoroughly vet their drivers before hiring, ensuring that individuals with repeated violations do not drive on our roadways.

The surviving family of the pickup truck driver deserves justice. It is essential to hold accountable all those responsible for this preventable, tragic incident.
